Starfield and Elden Ring alone would have been enough, but that’s not all in store for RPG fans in 2022. Here are five role-playing games to keep an eye out for this year.
Starfield
Starfield is the first new franchise from Bethesda in 25 years, so naturally there’s a lot of buzz behind it, especially from RPG fans who’ve grown up on The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Unfortunately, in typical Bethesda fashion, nothing is known about the game at this point, except for the fact that it’s a sci-fi themed first/third-person RPG in which you play as a space explorer traversing the far reaches of space.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong
From the long-running but criminally underrated Vampire: The Masquerade franchise comes Swansong, a story-driven RPG that allows players to control three distinct vampires who must determine the fate of their coven. Set in Boston, each character in Swansong will come equipped with special abilities that can be used in battle or during exploration. Your choices in the game and how you choose to be around humans will determine how missions and the narrative play out.
Forspoken
A new action RPG from Square Enix, Forspoken tells the story of a young New Yorker who finds herself trapped in a magical land. Thanks to a magical bracelet on her hand, she can quickly traverse the land and dish out all sorts of magic on the corrupted creatures that roam this kingdom. Forspoken’s USP lies in its traversal system that allows the protagonist to leap across great distances and jump from tremendous heights without worrying about the repercussions.
Elden Ring
Elden Ring is the next evolution of the Souls formula as it moves the action from linear levels into a true open world, where the emphasis firmly lies on combat and exploration. Even though Elden Ring ushers players into a vast and expansive open world, it will still follow the pillars of older From Software games, namely brutal combat, interconnected level design and hard-as-nails enemy encounters. If you find the game too challenging, you can always invite a friend to help you out. If you need further incentive (not that you should), Elden Ring sees the developers collaborate with Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin, so you can be sure this game will excel in story and narrative.
Elex II
Elex was an action RPG developed by a lesser-known European developer that had a lot of potential despite with its bugs, glitches and general jank. With Elex II, Piranha Bytes is polishing up on the original premise with a bigger game world, more fluid traversal options – including a jetpack – a story where your actions have consequences, and a revamped combat system that will allow players to engage with enemies any way they’d like.
