Rainbow Six Extraction – previously known as Quarantine – is a three-player co-operative survival game set in the Rainbow Six universe. But instead of going up against sweaty players online who’ll abuse you and your mom, you and two other teammates must work together to take on a hostile alien presence that’s slowly taking over the world. And by world, we mean North America.
The world of Extraction is broken up into four diverse locations, with each location offering players three maps to choose from. Each map is then further split into three zones, and each zone has its own set of objectives that change every time you replay a level. This infinitely boosts the replay value of Extraction since objectives and enemy placements change every time you revisit levels.
Objectives in Extraction are similar to those seen in Siege – but with an alien spin. You’ll have to escort captured VIPs (scientists), take down HVTs (high-value alien targets), blow up nests, etc. Each map has three objectives to complete, but you can extract anytime you’d like. Finishing all three and then extracting will grant you a better XP pay out, but things also get progressively tougher as you move deeper into the level. If your operator gets downed during a mission, he or she will automatically be captured and thrown into an alien pod. You’ll then have to relaunch that same mission to go in and rescue them, and till you do, they’ll remain MIA (missing in action) from your roster.
Before each mission, you’ll be able to choose and customise your operator for the task at hand. If you’re familiar with Siege, you’ll know who’s good for what situation, but even if you aren’t, just experiment. Some operators can offer invaluable support in the form of healing and armour, while some are good at just killing everything that moves. Besides the weapons on your operator, you’ll also be able to choose tactical gear that ranges from flash bangs to self-revive kits, claymores, mines and lots more. Even with its focus on PVE, Extraction is very much a Rainbow Six game, so you absolutely have to plan your mission and play it at the game’s methodical pace. It’s also in your best interest to make use of Extraction’s environmental destruction, so shoot targets through walls or make those tactical holes in walls to spot enemies before they spot you. Treat it like a Left4Dead with wanton running and gunning and you won’t survive long.
Much like the rest of the world, we didn’t think much of Extraction when it was first announced, but after playing it for the past few days, the game has surprised us in every way possible. It’s not a cheap cash grab on a popular franchise, but instead feels like a well thought out and polished game that’s immense fun with friends. Extraction also ships with a significant amount of launch content, with 12 maps, 18 operators and end-game modes that change every week. If you enjoy slow-paced, tactical shooters, this one is a no brainer.
