We’re accustomed to seeing busy game release schedules in the September to November period, but the festivities start early this year, as February has some fantastic games lined up for release. From long-awaited sequels and exciting new IP, across multiple genres, there’s a good chance every gamer will find at least something to look forward to this month. Here are some of the standout new games coming out in February.
Dying Light 2 – February 4
Much delayed, but all’s well if it ends well. Techland has been taking its own sweet time to get Dying Light 2 right, and what we’ve seen so far looks promising. The addictive parkour mechanics and the tense day-night cycles, coupled with reworked combat and an interesting faction system, makes the world of Dying Light 2 one that we can’t wait to dive into – and make it out in one piece.
Sifu – February 8
From the studio that brought us Absolver, Sifu is another game built entirely around hand-to-hand combat. Think John Wick without the guns and that should give you a rough idea, but Sifu has a lot else going for it. Set across multiple tight levels in diverse locations, Sifu presents complex martial arts mechanics to dispense of the many varied and challenging enemies thrown at you. And the fact that protagonist ages each time he dies only adds another layer to this already intriguing package.
OlliOlli World – February 8
The latest in one of the coolest and most slept-on skateboarding franchises out there, OlliOlli World is a quite a departure from the first two games. While its snappy and intuitive skateboarding controls will seem familiar to fans, the new game features a radically different art style, with colourful 2D cartoon-inspired visuals. There’s also a deeper story this time and multiple areas to explore. And for the completionists out there, each course throws multiple objectives your way, challenging you to get the perfect line to strike them off.
The King of Fighters XV – February 17
While not quite a household name like Tekken or Street Fighter, King of Fighters is just as iconic in the fighting genre, with legions of passionate fans. The King of Fighters XV will see quite a few major changes to the franchise. Firstly, this will be the first time a KOF game will be built on the Unreal Engine. This time, the developers are also overhauling the online multiplayer in a bid to deliver a lag-free experience in line with other fighting games in the competitive circuit.
Total War: Warhammer 3 – February 17
And they told us strategy games were dead! The genre is seeing quite a resurgence of late and it’s only fair that Creative Assembly bless us with a new Total War game in the Warhammer universe. Like earlier games, this one features a mix of turn-based strategy and real-time tactics, and fans can look forward to the addition of new factions, while old favourites return.
Destiny 2: The Witch Queen – February 22
Delayed from its planned 2021 release, The Witch Queen is the sixth expansion of Destiny 2 and a big one at that. According to Bungie, it’s the most preordered Destiny 2 expansion yet. We can see why – this one will bring new missions, PvE locations, PvP maps, weapons and gear, as well as a new raid.
Grid Legends – February 25
While Forza Horizon continues to be the lone flag-bearer for the arcade racing genre, Codemasters is looking to return to the glory days of Grid with Grid Legends. The street and track racing game features a story mode and the return of familiar racing teams and rivalries – remember Ravenwest? Familiar Grid modes are set to return, along with the introduction of a Boost mode featuring electric cars.
Elden Ring – February 25
Soulsborne fans, the wait is almost over. With Bloodborne skipping PC and Sekiro (while amazing) not quite scratching that itch, Elden Ring promises to be everything fans have been waiting for since Dark Souls 3 came out more than five years ago. That iconic combat, those legendary adversaries and now in a fantastical open world with plenty of opportunities for adventure and exploration. February 25 can’t come soon enough!
