After months of drip-feed drops, the month of October brings with it all sorts of game releases, from action games to extreme sports releases to new and updated variations of old school titles. Here are the most prominent games coming out this month.
FIFA 22 – October 1
The world’s favourite football game is back and this year’s EA has promised significant improvements to gameplay, with new dribbling and defending mechanics added in. Sadly, the new AI-controlled animation tech – Hypermotion – is for some reason missing in the PC version. Bad EA!
Alan Wake Remastered – October 5
After wrapping up the Max Payne series, Alan Wake was developer Remedy’s survival-horror take on third-person action. You played as the eponymous novelist, whose wife goes missing in the creepy town of Bright Falls, where somehow a lot of his work has come to life. With the remaster, you get improved texture work at 4k resolution, and the base game with both DLC episodes included.
Far Cry 6 – October 7
With Far Cry 6, players will travel to the beautiful, fictional island of Yara, where they’ll be tasked with overthrowing a brutal dictator’s regime using any means necessary. Like with all Far Cry games since Far Cry 3, you’ll be free to approach every mission in any order you deem fit. Oh, and this time, you can recruit a violent rooster and a pet crocodile for backup.
Back 4 Blood – October 12
If you’ve been missing the Left 4 Dead series, Back 4 Blood is here to fill that undead void. Made by the very same team that made L4D, B4B is a four-player cooperative shooter (with competitive game modes as well) that features copious amount of zombie killing. New to this game is the addition of a card system – gameplay modifiers that can both make the game tougher and allow players to create their own builds.
Crysis Remastered Trilogy – October 15
While the Crysis remaster doesn’t bring modern day PCs to their knees the way it did back in 2007, it is still a gorgeous looking non-linear, first-person shooter that lets players explore a tropical island as a special ops soldier on the hunt for alien technology. Now, the rest of the trilogy is getting the remaster treatment too, and you’ll also be able to pick them up individually through Steam.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes – October 21
Much like the other games in the Dark Anthology series, House of Ashes is a narrative-driven cinematic experience. It doesn’t control like a conventional third-person game; instead think of it as a movie where you’re the director, and you control the outcome of all the characters using QTEs (quick-time events). Trust us; it’s a lot more fun than it sounds.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – October 26
Marvel’s Avengers had a solid campaign, but its end game (heh) content was severely lacking. Thankfully, with GOTG, Square Enix is ditching the games-as-a-service mechanics to concentrate on a single-player experience. You play as Star Lord, the leader of the pack, as he navigates his crew through all sorts of cosmic shenanigans. The game will play out as a third-person shooter, with players having the ability to command their crew during battle.
Age of Empires IV – October 28
Everyone’s favourite RTS is back after a gap of nearly 16 years. This time around, you’ll be sent to the Middle Ages to learn about the Norman conquest of England. At launch you’ll have access to eight civilisations, with a lot more free content planned post-release. Microsoft is also looking to make AOE beginner-friendly, with a campaign that explains all the mechanics to newcomers.
Riders Republic – October 28
Even if you aren’t a big fan of Far Cry or Assassin’s Creed, there’s no denying the fact that Ubisoft make super immersive open-world games. With Riders Republic, you can avoid all the killing and stabbing that comes with the other games, and just explore this expansive world indulging in all sorts of extreme sports from mountain biking to skiing, wingsuit flying and lots more without leaving the comfort of your room.
